Join us for a walk and talk with Lisa Milton, director of Natural Resources at Newfields in Indianapolis. She will share information on the challenges of managing a 35-acre gravel quarry lake adjacent to the White River on the grounds of the Virginia B. Fairbanks Art & Nature Park at Newfields. There is extensive erosion along the berm that separates the lake from the river and water quality data collected by the White River Alliance River Assessment Field Team shows water quality issues. Improvements made to the area include the removal of invasive honeysuckle shrubs, engineered improvements to the berm, and the installation of geotextile and native plants in some areas. Soil erosion, nutrient loading, and invasive species are all long-term challenges for the lake, and management plans are being developed.
